Marchesi di Barolo (which used to be known as Opera Pia Barolo) is one of the region's most historic wineries. Marchesi Falletti was a former proprietor of the estate in the early 1800s and is widely considered to be the creator of what is now known as Barolo. The wines made here were and continue to be Nebbiolos of great breed and complexity. Vinous notes on the 1979 vintage: "A year of slender, focused wines that have aged better than expected, 1979 is the insider's vintage of the decade. The best 1979 Barolos are fully mature yet show good freshness and energy considering their age. The 1979s have long lived in the shadow of the 1978s, but this is a terrific and underappreciated vintage. The late harvest year saw rain and even a little bit of snow towards the end of the season, which helped shape decidedly mid-weight, lithe wines."
