Villa Calcinaia has been owned by the Capponi family for an uninterrupted 500 years. It is now in the hands of 37th-generation Conte Sebastiano Capponi, who has managed the estate since 1992. The south- to southeast--facing vineyards on clay-schist soil give structured wines and the 2018 is among the vintage’s firmer annata. There is ample dark, round, ripe plum, cherry and blackcurrant to back up the layered tannins and fill the mouth. An exuberant and robust Chianti Classico with lots to chew on. (Drink between 2021-2027). 90 points. Decanter.
